BANANATIME takes you into the world of travel together with their friends.
This month in the spotlight: Karin Barnhoorn. She is a freelance travel writer and founder of Chapter Fifty. We asked her seven questions to get to know her better.

Please can you introduce yourself and share how you started Chapter Fifty
My name is Karin Barnhoorn (’63), freelance travel writer and founder of I started my luxury (travel) lifestyle platform for fifty something women after I sold my online luxury marketplace in 2013. The year I turned fifty!

Can you describe a perfect 24 hour day for you in Amsterdam? Or in another city that you consider home?
My perfect 24 h in Amsterdam will start with my dear friends (who happen to live next door conveniently) when we take a shot of fresh air with a long walk along the lake at Durgerdam. Just outside of the city and so tranquil! Back in town we have a healthy breakfast at our local hang-out Betty Blue.

Later that morning I will join a yoga class at Sai Mithra yoga. From there I walk to Flower (Power) Stall on the bridge at the corner of Oudezijds Achterburgwal and Oude Hoogstraat, to buy a huge bouquet of colorful fresh flowers of owner Ed. For lunch the outside terrace of De Plantage next to Artis Zoo is a great spot, although these winter days we stay inside of course!

In the afternoon, after visiting the Rijksmuseum to see the latest expo, I retreat around the corner at Akasha Spa at the Conservatorium Hotel. Because, what's a perfect day without a perfect massage? I my renewal I will meet my husband Hans for a drink at Tunes Bar, where they mix a sweet ’n sour non-alcoholic cocktail for me before we have a romantic (veggie) dinner for two at Taiko Restaurant. To walk upstairs to our room with view over my dear hometown for a little staycation. Needless to say we arrived by bike.

Is there any city you love to travel to the most?
Yes, definitely Lisbon. We live both in Amsterdam city center as well on our renovated quinta in the hinterland of Algarve. In the South of Portugal. When the rural life gets to quiet Lisbon is only a two hour drive away, so this feels like my second hometown.

What has been your most memorable vacation? What made it so special for you?
That is our 60 days sabbatical we did last year. We started in Hong Kong, from there to Japan (love!!), New Zealand and Fiji. First time ever to travel for such a long time. It was so special to travel together and discover new countries, new cultures and amazing people. It was such an travel experience that we decided to do it again. In fact I am answering these questions from the Outback of Australia, our second 60 days trip.

"I wear BT almost every day and these items mix very well with my wardrobe.
I get a lot of compliments and women want to feel the fabric because it looks so comfy and luxurious.
Well, what can I say. It is." - Karin Barnhoorn

Can you share what makes travel luxurious for you?
What makes travel luxurious for me is the absence of stress and density. Being able to visit luxury lodges in natural environments, meet new cultures, people and places. But also the feeling of being lost in location, time and dates. It feels as if I am really disconnected but - this may sound strange - truly connected to the bigger world at the same time.

Do you have a favourite means of travel? Train, Plane, Bike, Boat, other?
Ah, now you’ve got me. I try to contribute to a healthier planet, reduce my carbon footprint and there I go again on board of large plane. Because I do love to fly very much, the longer the better! I love to fly flat and one of my fav airlines is Cathay Pacific business-class, they really spoil you and try to make your trip as comfortable as possible.

Do you have a favourite BANANATIME item you like to take on your travels
Haha, can I name 4? This trip I have 4 silk items with me, the pop-over, the easy pants, the tapered pants and the short sleeved blouse. I wear BT almost every day and these items mix very well with my wardrobe. I get a lot of compliments and women want to feel the fabric because it looks so comfy and luxurious.
Well, what can I say. It is.
