マリア&ホアキンとのひととき

MEXICO CITY, 2024.
BANANATIME FRIENDS
We love meeting people who live creativity in their own way — and when their paths cross, something unique comes to life. We met María and Joaquín in Mexico City, where their world of images, sound, and everyday beauty instantly drew us in. She captures stories through photography; he creates music that moves people.

FOR BOTH

How did you two meet?

Some mutual friends wanted to introduce us because they thought we’d be a perfect match. They tried to set us up a couple of times, but we couldn’t align our schedules—until a month later, Joaquín messaged María on Instagram to invite her for a drink at a bar-restaurant María suggested (Farmacia Internacional).

Do you think being creatives in different disciplines has brought you closer as a couple and as friends?

Definitely. We love doing things related to art, food, music, design, and nature.

FOR MARIA

How did you get interested in photography, and what do you enjoy most about working with it?

I’ve always loved the idea of telling stories. I officially got started when I met Joaquín—his roommate at the time (now a good friend) lent me his cameras so I could learn and fall in love with photography.

How do you stay inspired with new ideas? Who are your references?

Traveling always opens my mind—meeting new people and cultures.

What do you like to do during your BANANATIME? That is, your free or relaxing time.

Reading, going to the movies, and cooking.

Any recommendations for Mexico City? Restaurants, bars, things to do, etc.

Anahuacalli Museum, Chapultepec Forest, “Totte Para Todos” café, dinner at Loose Blues in La Juárez, Antonia Bookstore, and the sweet bread from García Madero in La Condesa.

FOR JOAQUÍN

How did you first get into music?

My parents were my first influence—not because they were musicians, but because of the music that was always playing at home. Later I met some friends who had a band and played covers, which made me want to do the same, so I started playing music with my brother Cristobal.

What do you enjoy most about playing live in front of an audience?

Dancing and watching people enjoy songs we created—never imagining they’d resonate so deeply with so many.

What do you like to do during your BANANATIME? That is, your free or relaxing time.

Going to the movies, playing sports, discovering new music, and visiting record stores.

Any recommendations for Mexico City? Restaurants, bars, things to do, etc.

Eat at Choza or Makan, go running in Chapultepec Forest, dig for records at Salvaje Music Store or Revancha Records, and grab a drink at Minos Sound Room.
